How About A Party for The Rest of Us Who AREN’T Going to Burning Man?

Hey fellow San Franciscans! As you may or may not know, the infamous Burning Man shindig starts on August 27th and lasts through September 3rd. Now, while I have nothing personally against the .02% of San Franciscans who engage in this (or any other) fun activity, I do get tired of some people in town telling me if I don’t go to Burning Man, I’m somehow not cool enough to live in the Bay Area.

So, maybe it’s time we had a party whilst the better-than-us crowd is out of town…any ideas, folks?

    trivia! ok i’m boring and in a rut.

    This is a good idea! I don’t think I have any specific ideas though 🙂

  3. You keep saying you have nothing against it so much it’s clear you do have something against it. It’s not .02% of San Franciscans, it’s 2% (100 times more) of San Franciscans.
    And it’s the coolest 2% of San Franciscans. (Couldn’t resist goading you.)
    But seriously, I know it’s annoying to hear, but when people say you won’t understand burning man until you go, it’s true. You can’t verify this without going, of course, which makes it doubly annoying if you’ve already decided it’s not the sort of place you would want to go.
    And it might not be the sort of place you want to go. But you can’t easily tell without going. Catch-22.

    A burning muni bus party?

  5. Greg says:

    @jerry: haha! good one!
    @brad: truly cutting edge artistic and social experiments can stand up to a few MAD magazine-esque jokes once in a while.
    more importantly, TRULY cutting edge, challenging social and artistic experiments don’t attempt to replace one oppressive fashion/social/artisitic fascism with another.
    as for the math…well…not every person at BM is from SF…and when you divide the actual number by the actual number of residents, well you get the .02%.
    More people from SF and the world go to Comic-Con, and frankly that’s a more individulalistic, nonconformist expression of self than the pretentious, corporate sponsored hypocrisy of a few rich kids in the desert. At least the Comic-Con folks don’t have the pretense.
    Plus, those Lara Croft girls and anime cosplayers are REALLY hot. 🙂

  6. Greg says:

    @anna: hey I like that idea. Or we could have a trivia contest made up of jokes along the lines of “How many burners does it take….?”
    seriously we gotta do trivia at the blackthorn sometime!

  7. MattyMatt says:

    You’ll never understand the sensation of licking a weedwhacker until you do it, either.

  8. No. SF has 750,000 people. .02% of that would be 150 people. 40,000 go to burning man, and I’ve heard stats that 15,000 of them are from SF (ie. 2%). It might be a bit less. Certainly more than half are from the whole bay area. 20,000 people would be .3% (not .03%) of the whole Bay Area’s 6 million.
    But unlike Comicon, Burning Man is dominated by SFers and comes from SF, so it is much more tied to the identity of SF than Comicon could be.

  9. Greg says:

    @mattymatt: HA! Good one.
    @Brad: “I won’t apologize for the N Judah Chronicles no matter what the facts are” 😉
    Seriously, I question how cool or alternative it is based on the firsthand experience of our own “Mason Powell” here at the NJC.
    He was a manager at a casino in Reno for many years and always knew when Burning Man was over- the large resort he worked at with the huge casino and hotel towers would literally be flooded by people checking in for a few days of slots, air conditioning and the like. They didn’dt always enjoy the amenities of said rooms BEFORE heading to the casino floor, sadly.
    besides comiccon had Rosario Dawson, the cast of Heroes AND Battlestar Galactica, and more anime and manga than you can shake a stick at.
    When Burning Man features some of the above, then maybe, just maybe, I’ll blow $300 bucks ona ticket and 1000s more on an RV and ice and more to live in the middle of the desert for a week and get my eyeballs seared out by sun and dust. Til then, the rest of us should head to the bar on my birthday or something.
    And as always this is all meant in fun, people give the NJC plenty o’ crap and we take it in stride.

  10. Even if you do go now, all you’ll hear is people talking about how good it used to be before all the new people ruined it. Fuck ’em all.

  11. Greg says:

    @TDA: Ironically that’s what people say about Comic-Con ever since Hollywood has invaded it….
    I remember people talking about burning man way way back in college when it was just getting started but never knew where they held it.
    I always figure if I know too much about something it can’t be that cutting edge.
